Man gets five years in prison for possessing credit cards numbers

Updated:

A Las Vegas man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing more than 1,400 credit card numbers.

Authorities say 36-year-old Scott Edward Whitney knowingly possessed the credit card numbers with the intent to defraud.

Whitney will also serve three years of supervised release and pay $77,000 in restitution to his victims.

Whitney had previously pleaded guilty last year after being arrested in July 2003.

Law enforcement officers determined that Whitney had been dumpster diving. The practice involves taking discarded financial documents, bank statements and other personal information from trash bins.

He used 15 of the credit card numbers to make unauthorized charges.
