Nevada Lawmakers hear testimony on autism funding

Lawmakers heard emotional testimony Monday on a bill up that would mandate health care plans to provide coverage for screening and treatment of autism spectrum disorders.

Supporters of AB162 say this will end the discrimination by insurance companies against families affected by autism. They say autism treatments can cost about $40,000 a year, and many families simply can't afford it.

Megan Crandy, a girl who has autism, told lawmakers that she hopes other kids will be able to get insurance coverage, because the treatment has helped her tremendously.

The bill, however, was not without opposition. Lawmakers heard testimony from some who said the bill was too broad and could put a burden on employers.
