The owner of The Canine Club in Sparks is planning on closing its kennel doors for good, and the closure of the facility is impacting more than just the owners. Several dogs who call the facility home are now looking for a new place to stay.
Robin Baizel, the owner, said she and her husband can no longer afford to pay the rent on the building. They received their eviction notice on March 4, and they have to be out on Wednesday, March 11.
"I've never actually had my world crumble down around my ears, so I can't say for sure. But if my world turned to dust and did crumble, it would probably feel a lot like I felt. It was devastating," Baizel said.
The owner said she and her husband moved from Alaska in 2004 to start their own business in Sparks. She described The Canine Club as their dream job, and she can't believe she has to shut it down now. The facility was a boarding house and a daycare center for people to bring their dogs.
Baizel said the rising cost of business in the tough economy took a toll on The Canine Club. Money got even tighter at the facility when her husband ruptured his esophagus and had to be hospitalized.
"We were trying to find something we could put together and then boom," Baizel said.
Baizel said her biggest worry is finding homes for three dogs that were rescued and now live at the facility.
She is looking for homes for Sherri, Grace and Rosie. Sherri is a pit bull who was found wondering around the streets in South Lake Tahoe. Rosie and Grace are what many call Gabbs dogs. Last year, over 140 dogs were put in shelters after the owner of the dogs died. Volunteers had to work with many them because the dogs had little interaction with humans for years. Baizel said all three dogs are sweet and loving characters now.
