Bomb scare at Sparks gas station is false alarm

The Nevada Highway Patrol, the bomb squad and other local law enforcement agencies responded to the Terrible's gas station on La Posada and Pyramid Highway just after 10 p.m. Monday night after someone reported a suspicious cooler left in the parking lot.

The bomb squad decided the safest thing to do would be to destroy the cooler.  After blowing up the cooler, authorities found there were only earth and cement core samples inside.

Bomb technicians say it's always better to be overly cautious, and they want members of the public to be aware of their actions as well.

"We're spending millions on homeland defense, fighting a war on terrorism, yeah the public needs to be aware of this.  People should be aware.  They should leave stuff lying around," Bomb Technician Chris Carter said.

NHP Trooper Kara Mary Kelly-Borgone was critically injured in a car crash on her way to the scene of this bomb threat.
