Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons has filed reports showing he raised $255,650 last year to cover various legal bills, including costs incurred in an FBI probe to see if he took money and gifts in exchange for helping a Reno company get lucrative defense contracts.
The reports filed this week with the secretary of state's office show that $40,000 of the money came from companies connected with billionaire Sheldon Adelson, head of Las Vegas Sands Corp. whose holdings include the Palazzo and Venetian megaresorts in Las Vegas.
Also listed in the legal defense fund reports is $61,000 loaned to the defense fund by Gibbons and his wife, Dawn.
Monte and Susan Miller gave $20,000. Miller, a Las Vegas businessman, was a leader of Gibbons' transition team after his November 2006 election. Gibbons also got $10,000 from his campaign adviser, Sig Rogich.
Expenses include more than $111,000 to prominent attorney Abbe Lowell's Washington, D.C., law firm. Lowell has defended many high-profile clients, including disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Also listed is $90,000 to Las Vegas attorney Don Campbell's law firm.
