Visitor's to Washoe County who hold "Carry Concealed Weapons" permits from Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee and Utah will be allowed to carry in Nevada beginning October 1, 2007, according to a press release from the Nevada Sheriff's and Chief's Association.
Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley reminds residents, "This does not imply reciprocity. There are many states that do recognize Nevada CCW permits, but we are reminding people to check with the individual states prior to visiting."
While these changes in the law will not affect Nevada's permit holders, there are some changes that will positively affect citizens getting a CCW permit here:
1. The fees have been reduced to $100.25 for a new permit and $65.25 for a renewal. The FBI lowered their fingerprints fee so the Sheriff is passing that savings on to customers.
2. If a person qualifies with a revolver, they can carry any revolver, and no longer have to qualify on each revolver. In the case of a semi-automatic, people still need to qualify on each.
3. The expiration date will be 5 years from the issue date for resident and non resident permits.
These changes came about from new Legislation passed in 2007 requiring the Nevada Department of Public Safety must determine which of all the States', requirements for carrying a CCW permit are "substantially similar to or more stringent than Nevada's requirements."
States to be considered must also have an electronic data base of all valid permit holders that is accessible around the clock to law enforcement.
