Global Gaming Expo attendees warned of hepatitis-A exposure

Updated:

People who met a sales representative at a free ice cream booth at a Las Vegas convention this month are being warned they may have been exposed to hepatitis-A virus.

Clark County health officials say people who attended the Global Gaming Expo are at risk.

About 25,000 people from all 50 states and 20 countries attended the expo September 13th through 15th at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

An official with Minnesota-based Schwan's Food Company says a sales rep who lives in Colorado got sick after getting home from the conference, and was diagnosed with hepatitis-A on September 17th.

The company says there's no evidence the ice cream was tainted, or that the salesman handled food given out to conference attendees. But it's pretty likely he shook hands with some people.

Hepatitis-A is a virus that can affect the liver and cause jaundice, which gives patients a yellow tinge to the skin.

The condition can last several weeks, but is rarely fatal. It's usually spread by people touching their hands to their mouth after using the bathroom, or by shaking hands with infected people who haven't washed thoroughly.
