Sparks woman heads up national effort opposing military draft

Updated:

An organization calling itself Mothers Against the Draft says the United States has stopped short of guaranteeing it will not reinstate the draft, and they wants assurance from congress that our civilians won't be sent to war.

Many might ask why is MAD is launching a nationwide campaign against a draft, when there is no draft.

Sparks resident Janine Hansen is MAD's national chairwoman. She says it is a preemptive strike to stop the draft before it begins. "With 40 percent of our military being guard and reserve units, there will be tremendous pressure that they can't have the man power requirements."

Hansen believes the possibility of a draft in the near future is eminent and she wants congress to ensure that US civilians won't be required to serve in the military. "There are indications, talks about Iran and North Korean, we will need additional troops we want to say no to the draft in advance."

But the reinstatement of a draft was dismissed as a rumor by members of congress, and Nevada Congressman Jim Gibbons says no member of the Bush Administration or the Department of Defense has ever called on congress to authorize the reinstatement of the draft.

Gibbons says a 400 members of Congress voted against a bill to reinstate the draft last October.

Despite this, Hansen has doubts. "I hope they're rumors, that's what we hope, this is a preemptive strike, we want to make sure congress knows we are opposed to a draft, we want them to oppose a draft."

Some say there is no basis behind Hansen's fight, but for some like David Zabalza who may be called to duty first the possibility is very real. "I think some people aren't made to go to the military, they're just not ready for it, not ready to kill nobody."

Some, like Paul Garcia, are behind it. Garcia says it is a fitting way to pay back the nation for all it has done for us. "America has been a great place to live, whoever was born here is fortunate, I think they should pay a little back to America."

MAD says the public has the right to know where each member of Congress stands on the issue. They have sent a survey to members of Congress and expects the responses back next month.
