Commissioners agree to rehear Burning Man request

Washoe County commissioners will rehear a request by Burning Man organizers seeking approval of a permanent staging area for the event on 200 acres of land they own.

Burning Man organizers made their pitch during the commission's regular meeting Tuesday. While agreeing to hear more arguments for the proposal on June 24th, commissioners said there's no guarantee another vote on the issue will be taken.

Black Rock City LLC, the organization that stages the annual counter-culture festival, sued the county last week over the commission's denial of the staging area.

Last year the week-long event drew about 30,000 people to the Black Rock Desert north of Reno over Labor Day weekend.

Organizers say the staging area is needed to house volunteers and store and construct materials for the festival.
