A northern Nevada couple that escaped serious injury after a drunk driver drove his car through their house and on top of their bed while they slept last week told their story on national television Monday.
Last Tuesday, University of Nevada, Reno students Kristin Palmer and Trenton Wood were sleeping in their rental home in Sparks, when they woke up trapped beneath the car that police say Eric Cross intentionally drove into their house, mistakenly believing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend were inside.
The car crashed through their front window, an office wall and landed on their bed.
The couple and Sparks Fire Battalion Chief Carl Blancoe shared their story on NBC's The Today Show Monday.
Wood said that they were both still in state of shock and said, "It's so surreal, it's like a dream."
Palmer indicated that the dangerous incident was scary for both of them, and that she had no warning before the car crashed into their home.
"It was like the house was shaking," she said.
Wood said that for the 45 minutes that they were pinned beneath the car that was leaking hot fluids, they could not see each other and they were worried it might explode.
Palmer said she was comforted by Wood's calmness throughout the ordeal. "I still can't believe we're alive," she said.
Blancoe said he had never seen anything like it, especially with a car lodged that far into a building.
The couple thanked the community for its support and help.
