Washoe County school trustees decided Tuesday to ask voters next year to renew a rollover bond issue.
Superintendent Heath Morrison recommended the issue be placed on the November, 2010 general election ballot.
The rollover bond issue was approved by Washoe County voters in 2002. It created a 10-year window, allowing the school district to issue bonds for new school construction, renovation of existing schools, and upgrade school technologies.
Without voter approval to renew it, the rollover bond issue would expire in 2012. Officials say the bonding authority has generated about $58 million annually for school improvements. Without it, they say funding for capital improvement projects would fall to about $5 million a year. If voters approve the issued it will be continued through 2020.
We need to make sure their education is world class, this district talks about world class educations, we need to give all students the innovation they need," said student mom Tami Berg.
"That's smartboards, that's having computers in every classroom."
The district says it is important to note that if the bond is renewed, property taxes will not be raised.
