Firefighters responded quickly Sunday to a brush fire that touched off in Cold Springs, less than 20 miles north of Reno.

Reno Fire officials say the fire is 100 percent contained and burned 30 to 40 acres.

The Village fire was burning on the hillside above Mud Springs Drive, near Village Parkway, and was sparked at about 2:45 p.m., according to Sierra Front.

A member of the incident management team said that a little after 4 p.m., firefighting efforts seemed to be stopping the blaze from coming down the hill toward the subdivision. Crews were mopping up the fire by 5:30 p.m., according to Reno Fire.

Fire crews responded by ground and air. Two firefighting air tankers, two helicopters and five engines were requested by Sierra Front. The Reno Fire Department sent a full crew as well. Battalion Chief Butch Van Leuven says they were able to jump on this fire so quickly because the air resources were close by after the Red Rock and Trailer 1 fires. He said they were "very fortunate" to have the tanker and helicopter in the Stead area.

No structures were threatened during this fire, and no evacuations were needed, according to fire officials. There was concern the fire would cruise down the hill toward the houses on Mud Springs Drive and the nearby subdivision, but the air attack quickly ended that concern, according to Van Leuven.

A group of residents and passersby gathered nearby to watch the firefighting efforts.

"It was moving up the hill, not very fast, but if the winds keep on kicking up it could get a little bit worse," Glen White, who stopped to watch, said.

No word has yet been released on cause of the fire.
