CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada lawmakers moved swiftly late Thursday to start overriding Gov. Jim Gibbons' veto of a $781 million tax increase plan -- which the conservative Republican
governor termed "just plain wrong."
There was no comment as the Democrat-controlled Senate voted 17-4 to override Gibbons' veto of SB429, the tax increase measure which was among 20 bills vetoed a few hours earlier.
Only four of the nine GOP lawmakers in the Senate supported Gibbons.
The Senate also voted 19-2 to override Gibbons' veto of SB431, a key budget measure which spells out how most non-state general fund money, about $12 billion, mainly in federal dollars, will be spent.
Senators also voted 18-3 to override the governor's veto of SB433, which provides for one-day unpaid furloughs each month for all state workers. That works out to about 4.6 percent less pay.
The Senate action must be duplicated in the Democrat-controlled Assembly to complete the override process. The Assembly also plans to conduct override votes Friday on its bills rejected by the governor. They include AB562, the $6.8 billion appropriations act which funds state government operations for the next two fiscal years.
