The Washoe County Health Department says a two-year-old Reno girl has the first Nevada case of swine flu. Authorities say she was never admitted to the hospital and is recovering with the help of viral medication.
The girl is enrolled in Reno's Fundamentals Daycare Center on Virginia Street. The daycare center says all the parents with children enrolled in their daycare have been notified and none of the other children are showing swine flu symptoms.
The sick child has not traveled outside of Reno recently. The health department says it is unclear how the girl got the illness. A spokesperson did say that another member of the family has been feeling sick.
The health department says the Centers for Disease Control notified it Wednesday morning of this case of swine flu. The Nevada case is one of 91 cases nationwide.
Nevada epidemiologist Dr. Randall Todd says the county is well prepared should more cases of the swine flu appear.
"We've practiced for this for years," he said.
The health department is pushing preventative measures that residents can take to protect themselves against getting sick. They say people can practice simple hygiene like washing their hands, coughing into their sleeves and using a tissue when they sneeze.
Only one U.S. swine flu death has been reported in the state of Texas. Visit the CDC Web site for a complete breakdown of swine flu cases.
